Congress to meet on Monday, 7 October 2024 to debate constitutional reform

Senate president Ricardo de los Santos, who also heads the National Assembly to Revise the Constitution, confirmed the Monday, 7 October 2024 gathering to begin the constitutional reform process.

The majority of Congress is made up of the legislators representing the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). The legislators approved the bill that declares the need for constitutional reform and mandates the National Assembly to convene within 15 days.

Both deputies and senators form National Assembly and are responsible to debate each proposed amendment presented by the President. The legislators also have the right to add new amendments.

If all amendments are approved, the same assembly has the authority to proclaim the new Constitution. The President of the Republic does not have the right to veto what the legislators approve.

The Constitution is now on track for the constitutional debates to begin on Monday, 7 October, just over a month after being presented by the Executive Branch.

If approved, the new Constitution could include amendments that reduce the number of deputies from 190 to 170, unify elections, establish a new method for selecting the Attorney General, incorporate the president of the Constitutional Court into the National Council of the Magistracy, and set at a maximum eight years the term of a President.
