The Dominican Republic is hosting the 83rd edition of the International Light Tackle Tournament Association (ILITTA) Blue Marlin Release Tournament, a catch-and-release event. With 22 boats from 10 countries participating, the tournament showcases the nation’s commitment to sustainable fishing and marine conservation.
This year marks the fifth time the Dominican Republic has hosted the ILITTA tournament, solidifying its reputation as a world-class destination for sport fishing enthusiasts. Competitors from the United States, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic itself are vying for the coveted title.
Tournament director Eduardo Read expressed his enthusiasm for the event, stating that it further solidifies the Dominican Republic’s position as a premier sport fishing paradise. He also noted that the country will be represented by three highly experienced teams, aiming to defend the championship title won in Panama last year.
The tournament runs from the 12th to the 19th of this month at the Cabeza de Toro Nautical Club. Anglers from around the world will be competing in daily fishing sessions, with boats heading out to sea each morning at 8am and returning at 4:30pm. Each team consists of three anglers, and a total of 66 competitors will be vying for the prestigious “Big Belt” award.
This international event highlights the Dominican Republic’s commitment to sustainable tourism and its rich marine biodiversity. As participants engage in the thrilling sport of blue marlin fishing, they also contribute to conservation efforts by practicing catch-and-release techniques.
