Abinader: Airspace with Haiti to remain closed until conditions improve

During the “La Semanal con la Prensa” press conference on Monday, 28 October 2024, President Luis Abinader firmly stated that the government does not contemplate allowing regular flights to Haiti “in the near future”.

“We do not plan to change the airspace regulations with Haiti until conditions there are different,” he said, addressing ongoing security concerns that have led to restrictions on flights and cargo to the neighboring country.

This stance aligns with Resolution No. 46-2024, issued by the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) on 5 March 2024, which immediately suspended all passenger and cargo operations to and from Haiti.

Haitian Prime Minister Gary Conille refused to attend the inaugural of President Luis Abinader in August 2024 in protest of the closed airspace, as his Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy had complained at the time.

The decision to close the airspace was prompted by the escalating instability in Haiti, which is currently facing a severe socioeconomic and security crisis, resulting in mass migration and heightened regional concerns.

With the situation still unresolved, uncertainty looms over when conditions might improve. For now, Abinader maintains that flight policies will remain unchanged until security is restored in Haiti and a more stable environment is established for citizens and travelers.
