UN to hold high-level meeting commemorating 25th Anniversary of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

A high-level meeting to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women will take on Monday, 25 November 2024, in the United Nations General Assembly Hall. The event, held in memory of the Mirabal sisters who were assassinated in the Dominican Republic during the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, will be hosted at the UN headquarters in New York City.

The program is scheduled to run from 10am to 1pm.and from 3pm to 6pm. Dominican Republic’s Minister of Women, Mayra Jiménez, traveled to New York to take part in the events.

The United Nations General Assembly is inviting all member states, the UN system, and other international, regional, and subregional organizations to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The goal is to raise awareness about preventing all forms of violence against women and girls, achieving gender equality, and fostering a culture of peace. The call extends to civil society, the private sector, academia, and individuals.

The resolution, adopted in June 2024 to the effect had been submitted by the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the UN.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women was officially declared by the UN through resolution 54/134 on 17 December 1999 and honors the memory of the Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal), Dominican activists who were murdered on 25 November 1960, as well as all women who have suffered abuse and violence around the world.

So far this year, there are reports of 55 violent deaths of women in the Dominican Republic.
