Interior and Police Minister Faride Raful announced on 3 December 2024 that the country’s accumulated homicide rate for 2024 has reached a historic low of 9.58 per 100,000 inhabitants. The minister highlighted that November has seen a significant decrease in these incidents.
Raful noted that there were even two days in the last week of November with no reported homicides, contributing to the overall decline. This figure marks one of the lowest rates in the past eight years, at 8.2 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The minister shared these statistics following a meeting to monitor the results of the National Security Plan led by Vice President Raquel Peña.
Raful also announced the upcoming launch of “Operation Peace Guarantee Christmas 2024,” a comprehensive security initiative designed to maintain public safety during the holiday season. 19,000 armed forces and police are assigned to holiday patrols.
The minister urged citizens to exercise caution during the holidays and cooperate with authorities to reduce conflict, traffic accidents, and homicides. “We will all work together to ensure that this Christmas is one of celebration, prudence, and above all, perfect coexistence,” Raful emphasized, calling on the public to support the security operations.
