President Abinader in Qatar

President Luis Abinader and Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani / Presidency

President Luis Abinader met with The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for an official session of talks at the Amiri Diwan in Qatar on 9 December 2024, the Peninsula Qatar reported. This is the first time that a Dominican President is received in Qatar by the head of state of Qatar.

The Peninsula Qatar reported that during the session, they discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two friendly countries in various fields of cooperation, especially in the fields of investment and economy. The Peninsula reported that Amir and Abinader also exchanged views on the most prominent regional and international issues and developments of common interest.

The session was attended by Chief of the Amiri Diwan Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Khulaifi; Minister of Finance Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari; Minister of Energy Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi; Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Faisal bin Thani Al Thani; Minister of Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi and a number of senior officials.

On the Dominican side, it was attended by Minister of Finance Jose Manuel Vicente; Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos; and Jose Miguel Bonetti, advisor to President Abinader, and other senior officials, also part of the Dominican delegation.

The Qatar News Agency also highlighted the meeting of Abinader with the Qatar Finance Minister Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, on the margin of the Doha Forum 2024. As reported, discussions during the meeting dealt with the two countries’ relations, primarily in the economy and trade spheres, and ways to boost them. The two sides also discussed aspects of bilateral cooperation. (QNA)

The visits were part of the agenda of Abinader who traveled to Qatar to attend the 7-8 December 2024 Doha Forum 2024 held under the theme “Inevitability of Innovation.” The two-day event featured discussions on geopolitical tensions, global security, humanitarian crises, and technological advancements. The forum brought together world leaders, politicians, and experts to propose solutions to these challenges.

The Dominican Presidency reported that President Luis Abinader stated on Sunday, 8 December in Qatar that, based on the country’s experience, cooperation has played a pivotal role, enabling the Dominican Republic to transition from being merely a recipient state to one that also offers and manages cooperation.

Abinader emphasized that for the Dominican Republic, cooperation is a fundamental pillar of foreign policy and essential for strengthening relations with other nations, particularly in areas such as trade promotion and investment attraction. He also pointed to tourism as a key factor in the country’s international positioning, highlighting its multiplier effect on the local economy.

“Among the experiences we can share, we believe our achievements have been driven by our political and social stability, the synergy between the public and private sectors, and the development of policies and initiatives focused on boosting strategic sectors,” said the President when participating in the forum panel “Perspectives on Cooperation in a Fragmented World.”

Qatar is one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG). In 2022, the Dominican Republic imported a total of US$834 million worth of LNG.

According to the Qatar Statistics Authority, the trade exchange between Qatar and the Dominican Republic for the period 2015-2022 was US$42.2 million, of which 96% corresponds to natural gas exports of Qatar to the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic exported to Qatar electronic instruments with 51%, medical instruments 24.3%, and pharmaceutical products 4% share.

Georges Bahsa Hazim is the Dominican ambassador to Qatar. He has highlighted how bilateral trade between Qatar and Dominic Republic is growing and both countries are working to create the right platforms for the two countries to expand their trade offers.

“The sectors with greater potential and attractiveness for Qatar is energy, medical products, electronics, textiles, agribusiness especially fruits that are increasing their presence and acceptance in Qatar and many more,” Hazim has said.
