The Chamber of Deputies has given its final approval to a significant aviation treaty with Canada, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations. The agreement, signed on 2 February 2023 by Canada Ambassador Christine Laberge and Civil Aviation Board president Jose Ernesto Marte Piantini, was ratified alongside similar treaties with El Salvador and Italy.
The aviation treaty with Canada is expected to stimulate tourism, trade, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations. By granting each other the right to overfly, land, and carry passengers and cargo, both countries aim to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth.
The treaty establishes an open skies policy, facilitating more direct flights between both countries and allowing airlines from both countries to operate more freely between their respective territories. This is expected to lead to increased competition, lower fares, and more flight options for travelers.
In 2023, 893,742 Canadian tourists visited the Dominican Republic, making it the second most important source of international tourists for the country. The United States was the top source of international tourists in 2023, with over 2.5 million foreign visitors.
