The Santo Domingo Global Foundation Festival (FCGSD) is set to take place from 31 January to 6 February in Caribbean Cinemas and other venues nationwide. The festival began in 2006 and is in its 17th year. It is regarded as the most important in the Caribbean. The country guest of honor this 2025 is India.
The festival opens with the film “The Silence of Marcos Tremmer” dedicated to the memory of Dominican filmmaker Ruben Abud. The plot is about Marcos Tremme, a successful publicist who lives in Madrid, madly in love with his wife, Lucía. One day, Marcos discovers that a deadly illness will end his life in a few months. The film has a 7.4/10 rating on IMDB. The Film was nominated to the 2024 Nominee Best Latin American Film at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival.
The co-production between the Dominican Republic, Spain, Argentina, and Uruguay, is directed by Miguel Ángel García de la Calera, produced by Hans García and Adolfo López, and will be screened on 31 January 2025, at the Carlos Piantini Hall of the Eduardo Brito National Theater in Santo Domingo.
“We are very proud to have a film of this quality as the opening of our festival,” said Omar de la Cruz, director of the FCGSD. “This co-production is a clear example of the talent and creativity that exists in our film industry,” added de la Cruz. “The Silence of Marcos Tremmer,” with its deep exploration of human relationships and its cinematic sensitivity, stands out for its rich narrative and visual aesthetics, transporting the viewer through diverse locations.
The Global Film Festival is an outstanding opportunity to watch films from India and explore new narrative perspectives. The presence of India as a guest country not only celebrates the richness of its cinema but also fosters cultural exchange and promotes a dialogue between different cinematic traditions, says Omar de la Cruz.
