
Dated 27 January 2025, a note attributable to US Secretary of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce states:
“US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Foreign Minister of the Dominican Republic Roberto Alvarez today to reaffirm the United States’ strong partnership with the Dominican Republic, and to discuss his upcoming visit to Santo Domingo. Secretary Rubio thanked the Dominican Republic for agreeing to host the next Summit of the Americas and Cities Summit. Secretary Rubio also expressed appreciation to the Dominican Republic for speaking out against the Maduro regime’s anti-democratic actions in Venezuela. Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Alvarez discussed the need to strengthen hemispheric security, including in Haiti.”
Newly appointed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic for meetings with President Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez on 5 February departing on 6 February 2025 as part of a first trip abroad that will also take him to Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala.
The Abinader administration has backed international support for combatting the gangs in Haiti to restore security, safety and governance to the neighboring country.
