The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) marked its 10th anniversary on Saturday, 1 February 2025, with President Luis Abinader leading the commemoration calling for unity and prioritizing ideas over individualism.
The party has experienced remarkable electoral success in a short time, but its future will largely depend on how it navigates internal and national challenges.
The party at present is torn by the presidential aspirations of several leading politicians. Among the leading contenders are today capital city mayor Carolina Mejía, today Minister of Tourism David Collado and today Vice President Raquel Peña, among others.
Founded in 2014 after a split from the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) that remained under the helm of Miguel Vargas Maldonado, the PRM is the youngest political organization to achieve power in the country. Its rapid ascent, driven by the decline of the then-ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), led to victory in the 2020 elections with today President Luis Abinader as its winning candidate in 2020 and again in 2024. The 2024 Constitution impedes Abinader from seeking another term in office.
“These ten years are our best guarantee, and they are only the beginning. Today begins a tomorrow that will always be shared,” Abinader proclaimed on Saturday to his leadership.
As the ruling party, the President said the PRM has an obligation to ensure political and social stability, but also to lead changes to make the country a fully developed place, where every citizen has the opportunity to realize their aspirations, with their rights guaranteed and protected by the state.
He said the challenge facing the PRM is to build a party whose ideas, energies and capacities remain at the service of the development and well-being of the people. “A party that is synonymous with stability and trust, and an engine of economic progress,” he said.
He said it is essential to strengthen unity, promote participation and ensure an organizational structure that reaches all sectors of society.
