Search for Sudiska Konanki called off

The Dominican authorities discontinued on Tuesday, 18 March 2025 the patrols allocated to search for the missing Sudiskha Konanki, a resident in the state of Virginia, United States and student at the University of Pittsburgh. Her family had issued a statement on Monday, 17 March whereby they concluded their daughter had drowned. Probably the largest rescue operation ever unfolded had not produced results after more than 13 days of intense search, from 6 March to 18 March 2025.

The Dominican authorities acted in cooperation with two detectives from Loudon County in Virginia and the US FBI agents who came to investigate the case that involved a resident in the United States. The last person to be seen with her, Joshua Steven Riibe was released from Police surveillance by a court order on 18 March 2025.

From the start, the young woman was thought to have drowned, but her family had asked for inquiries to be widened beyond the accidental drowning theory. This led to more questioning of the last person with her. On Monday, 17 March, the family would accept the theory that the young woman had drowned. Both Konanki and Riibe had been drinking heavily that evening. The beach had a red flag banning swimming and it was dark at 5 in the morning.
