Melba Segura de Grullón, president of the Sur Futuro Foundation and mother of the late Alexandra Grullón, has announced the creation of the Alexandra Grullón Academic and Cultural Fund. The fund honors the memory of her daughter, one of the officially reported 236 who died on that tragic night of 8 April 2025 when the roof of the JetSet Club collapsed on the hundreds attending a Rubby Perez merengue concert.

Alexandra Grullón, Melba Grullon’s only daughter, was among those who lost their lives in the tragedy. Today, as the nation marks two months since the disaster and what would have been Alexandra’s first wedding anniversary, her mother has revealed in a poignant tribute.

In a heartfelt message, Melba Segura addressed her daughter directly:

“Time marches on, and inevitably, anniversaries arrive. Today, as we commemorate two months since Alexandra joined our Creator, and also mark the first year since her marriage to Eduardo, I announce with unwavering faith in God’s plan that, in her memory, I will establish a fund to financially support young people pursuing higher education. Especially those who share Alexandra’s dream of building a better country for all.”

The Alexandra Grullón Academic and Cultural Fund will operate in partnership with educational institutions across the nation. These academic centers will select candidates from among the most needy, with priority given to those who lost family members in the 8 April tragedy. The fund will then review and approve scholarship awards.

Melba Segura has appointed a steering committee to handle the necessary legal and institutional arrangements, aiming to announce the first round of scholarships soon.

“At this moment, when I strongly feel God’s presence, my life is dedicated to serving Him, praying, and giving thanks for His strength—a strength that surpasses my own,” she concluded.

Melba expressed gratitude to all who have supported her during this difficult time, stating that their companionship and prayers have been a source of comfort.

Several local media commented on the second month anniversary of the tragedy with state prosecutors yet to release a report on the causes and the owner of the business yet to be known to have been formally questioned by the investigators.
