The Ministry of Labor has temporarily closed more than a dozen businesses, primarily those of Chinese origin, on the bustling Duarte Avenue in the National District. The closures, which took effect this Thursday, 3 July 2025, come after repeated warnings and investigations revealed severe violations of the Dominican Labor Code and occupational health and safety regulations.
The move has garnered significant support from citizens, who have expressed approval of the government’s decisive action. The Ministry of Labor’s official report detailed a litany of labor irregularities found within the shuttered establishments. These include:
• Lack of formal employment contracts
• Failure to meet minimum wage requirements
• Absence of social security benefits for employees
• Inadequate and unsafe working conditions
For months, the Ministry of Labor had been issuing warnings to businesses on Duarte Avenue regarding non-compliance with labor laws. However, with many establishments reportedly failing to rectify the issues, the Ministry proceeded with the temporary closures, transforming their words into concrete action. This enforcement highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring fair labor practices and protecting workers’ rights across the country.
