Just like Colombians did after low cost airlines added non-stop flights on several Colombia-DR routes, Mexicans are now discovering the Dominican Republic. The same is happening for Dominicans who are now flying in groups of friends and families to Mexico, enjoying the world class Mexican attractions.
Once Arajet entered the market with flights in 2022 into Felipe Angeles International Airport (NLU) on the outskirts of Mexico City, promotions and word of mouth have stimulated travel between both countries.
This has stimulated Mexican tourists to travel to the country to discover what all the hype is about the Dominican Republic. Likewise, Dominican tourists are discovering Mexico’s many destinations, making it a win-win situation for both countries.
The Ministry of Tourism reports that air arrivals of Mexican tourists were 160,953 passengers in 2025, up 39.9% compared to 2024.
Dominicans are discovering destinations beyond Ciudad Mexico, traveling to Puebla, Jalisco, San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro, Cancun and more.
Jacqueline Mora, vice minister of tourism, said in an interview with El Economista that Mexicans mainly come in families to enjoy Dominican resorts, but they are open to cultural experiences and spending outside the resort.
Mora says that most Mexicans enter and choose to stay in hotels in Punta Cana 64%, with a third arriving via Las Americas International. Tourists are mostly young people, in the 21 to 35 years age bracket.
Direct air travel from the Dominican Republic to Mexico has expanded significantly after the entry to market of Dominican-based low-cost carrier Arajet and the continued presence of Aeromexico. Currently, direct flights are available from two major Dominican airports to three primary Mexican airports (Mexico City and Felipe Angeles and Cancun).
Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) – Santo Domingo
Arajet offers nonstop service to Mexico City’s NLU – Felipe Angeles International Airport. Aeromexico operates direct flights to Mexico City’s MEX – Benito Juarez International Airport, the main international hub in Mexico.
Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ)
There is also air connectivity from Punta Cana to Cancun (CUN) offered by Arajet. Arajet also flies from Punta Cana to NLU-Felipe Angeles. Aeromexico flights from Punta Cana to Mexico City’s MEX – Benito Juarez airport.
