Plastic Surgery Society urges people to check credential of their physician

The Dominican Plastic Surgery Society (Sodocipre) has urged prospective patients to verify the credentials of their surgeons and the accreditation of the facilities. The announcement is reiterated after the death on 15 April 2026 of 27-year old Anyeli Meliza Sanchez Castillo after she underwent multiple surgeries under the responsibility of Dr. Jose Desena Montero. Desena Montero is not listed as a member of Sodocipre.

Diario Libre reports the victim underwent an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction in multiple areas, and a fat transfer, all on the same day. She had a four-year old child.

Health officials clarified that undergoing multiple procedures during a single plastic surgery session is permitted under current Dominican health regulations, provided specific safety protocols are met.

The plastic surgery society reports the complication rates by their members is at 2-3%, which is comparable to US standards.
