President Luis Abinader arrived in Georgetown, Guyana on the evening of Wednesday, 13 May 2026, for a high-level official visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties in energy, food security, and trade. The visit, followed the President’s participation in the World Free Zones Organization Congress in Panama. A Presidency press release said the visit underscored the growing “flexi-lateral” partnership with Guyana, the Caribbean’s fastest-growing economy.
Upon his arrival at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, President Abinader was received with full military honors before attending an official reception hosted by President Mohamed Irfaan Ali at the State House.
The primary objective of the mission was to build upon the landmark agreements signed in 2023. These frameworks focus on leveraging Guyana’s emerging status as a global energy powerhouse and the Dominican Republic’s advanced logistics and industrial sectors.
Key areas of the 2026 agenda include:
• Energy cooperation: Finalizing joint ventures for oil block exploration and the potential construction of a refinery.
• Agriculture and food security: Joint investment in corn and soybean production in Guyana to stabilize poultry feed supplies for the Dominican Republic.
• Trade logistics: Enhancing maritime and air connectivity to facilitate the movement of goods and services between the two nations.
During the stopover in Guyana, the President was accompanied by Minister of Industry & Commerce Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, the executive director of ProDominicana Biviana Riveiro and Dominican Ambassador to Guyana Ernesto Torres Pereyra.
Context of regional leadership
The meeting came just days after President Irfaan Ali had addressed the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, where he highlighted Guyana’s unprecedented GDP growth. For the Dominican Republic, the alliance represents a strategic move to secure long-term energy stability.
President Abinader is scheduled to return to the Dominican Republic on the evening of Thursday, 14 May 2026, to resume his domestic agenda.
