DR in top 10 for identity theft

The director of the foreign firm Minsait’s electoral solutions and digital identity division for Latin America, Ernesto Ramos Mega, told reporters last week that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) had canceled more than 13,000 personal ID cards (cedulas) for identity fraud in 2018. He also noted that the authorities had identified some 1,300 people who have committed crimes related to identity theft.

Ramos Mejía formerly was a top official at Mexico’s Federal Election Institute. He was in Santo Domingo to participate in the IV National Congress of Dominican Notaries. During the event, he highlighted that many who are habitual criminals and operate using forged IDs have yet to be identified. He noted that the Dominican Republic is in the top 10 countries in the world with identity theft.
