Will Ramfis Dominguez be allowed to run for President?

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) has on its agenda deciding whether Luis José Ramfis Rafael Domínguez-Trujillo, also known as Ramfis Domínguez Trujillo, will be accepted to run in the May 2020 presidential elections. As reported in El Dia, Dominguez Trujillo, who is a grandchild of former Dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, was officially registered last week by the National Party of Veterans and Civilians (PNVC).

Domínguez has against him that he is a United States citizen. He was born in New York on 22 May 1970. The Dominican Constitution establishes that a foreign-born person needs to have renounced the other citizenship 10 years before being eligible to run for President in the Dominican Republic.

As reported in El Dia, Dominguez argues that other presidential candidates have been dual citizens and have been allowed to run for office.

Regardless, given the delay in the JCE issuing its opinion, Dominguez has been campaigning actively for President. He has already appeared in several polls. In the January 2020 Gallup poll said he had 5.8% popularity.

As reported in El Dia, the JCE will decide on the matter on 24 February 2020, the same day that the agency has said it will decide on the alliances at the presidential level, after extending the deadline from 17 to 19 February.
