Public prosecutor to decongest jails

The public prosecutor (procurador fiscal) for the Distrito Nacional says that she will be releasing from prison all those that do not have criminal records and especially those that are jailed because they have been unable to pay fines. Dr. Zoila Martínez de Medina said that she will admonish those people that have been imprisoned for attempting to illegally enter U.S. territory, but will release them from jail. She said that rather than these people, those that should be in prison are the organizers of the illegal journeys. The city’s prosecutor expects to release the first 287, who have already completed their sentences or have not been sent to trial. She will also be favoring those who are sick. She hopes to contribute to the decongestion of the country’s prisons which currently house up to five times their planned capacity. She said “That La Victoria prison we will only house those who should be there.”
