President Balaguer made a surprise visit to the grounds of the old Perla Antillana horse-racing track on Wednesday, 27 March, telling the news media that “many problems” have been overcome in the construction of the four-hospital medical complex which will be known as the Centro de Diagnostico y Medicina Avanzada. The complex will have a working relationship with the University of Harvard Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital, and will include an infant-maternity hospital, a geriatric center, a trauma center and a hospital for diagnosis and advanced medicine. The complex, which will occupy 283,000 square meters, will also be home to the Civil Defense department and the Dominican Red Cross. The construction of the hospitals has been significantly accelerated, apparently on the wishes President Balaguer, in order to be finished before the end of his term on 16 August.
