The more than five-month-old doctors’ strike in public hospitals and those of the Instituto Dominicano de Seguro Social (IDSS) would seem to be nearing its end. The Asociación Medica Dominicana (AMD) has decided to lift the strike only if the Ministry of Public Health pays salaries withheld for January, February and March (all months in which AMD doctors did not work). The Minister of Public Health, Dr. Victor Garcia Santos, has said that he will discuss the matter with the AMD only after they return to work. Military doctors continue working in the public hospitals, as they have since 15 January, while the standoff continues.
