Pedro Mir receives award from Chilean ambassador

The Dominican poet, Pedro Mir, has received the Gabriela Mistral Medal from the Chilean government for “his contribution to universal literature”. The award was given to Mr. Mir in a ceremony held at the Chilean Embassy in Santo Domingo by the ambassador, Mr Hugo Miranda. It was held on the 50th anniversary of the famous Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral’s winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. Mr. Miranda praised Mr. Mir as “the most authentic representative of Dominican literature, the National Poet.” Upon receiving the medal, Mr. Mir spoke of the occasion on which Gabriela Mistral visited the this country and of the influence she has had on Dominican literature. Among the literary, intellectual and business leaders in attendance were former president and prolific writer Juan Bosch, with his wife Carmen, Diomedes Nuñez Polanco, Manuel Corripio G., Marianne de Tolentino, Julio Ravelo Astacio, Juan Bolivar Diaz, Manuel Corripio Alonso, Ramon Nuñez Ramirez, Rafael Toribio, Rafael Acevedo, Pedro Berges, Bernardo Vega and Silvano Lora.
