In an interview with Rumbo weekly news magazine, Jacinto Peynado says he seeks to regain the Reformista votes that have swayed to the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, upon rejecting the Balaguer administration and its policies. He said there are a series of problems that the people associate with the government. “There are still those who do not understand that the candidate is not Joaquin Balaguer, but Jacinto Peynado. There is a perception that it is the same thing, that it will be the same thing: that if now there is no electricity, and there is not a road to follow, then there will not be one with me,” he said. In the interview he also said that he does not want to attribute the good things of the Balaguer administrations to himself, but that also applies to the bad things. Nevertheless, he admitted that the party is but a shadow of President Balaguer. Jacinto Peynado, the most experienced person in government affairs out of the three candidates, is in the most difficult position of all. He must divorce himself from the adverse aspects of the Balaguer administration, but not lose with his criticism the many loyal Balaguer voters and, at the same time, he must regain the Reformista voters that have moved away in favor of Leonel Fernández.
