A report in the newspaper Hoy indicates that the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana seems to be the most organized party in fund collection. The PLD says that its funds come from regular subscriptions, the holding of raffles, and other activities, confirming that it is financed by the contributions of its members and supporters. Leonardo Porcella, director of finance for the PRD, told the newspaper that the organization spent RD$48.5 million in 1994, and RD$24 million in 1995.
The PRSC, which has been in power for the past two decades, says it is supported by contributions from friends of the organization. Traditionally, the PRSC has drawn upon government resources, as several of its prominent members have held key positions.
The same report, written by Ubaldo Guzman, says that political parties are expensive as they have to pay salaries, rent, telephone and electricity, among other services. The PRD, PLD and PRSC indicated that they spend millions to keep in operation. Conservative estimates put the total cost of the current campaigns by the three major parties at RD$300 million.
According to Eduardo Selman, finance secretary of for the PLD, the party has collected RD$25 million for the campaign so far. The Sorteo El Millonario 96 will be a key fund-raising event.
