More stringent rules bring political groupings to a minimum

According to a report by Tulio Navarette in the Listín Diario only three new parties and political groups have been recognized for the May election by the Junta Central Electoral, given the new rulings. The deadline for new groups was 4 September 1995.

The new legal requirements demand that parties or municipal movements seeking recognition by the JCE should have a minimum of 5% of the total voters inscribed in the Electoral Registry and have branches open and operating at least 50% of the 108 municipalities in the country, including the National District.

Some 19 national parties are recognized as able to participate in the 16 May election. In 1994, the JCE also recognized three municipal movements in Santo Domingo, Guaymate in San Cristóbal, and Santiago.

In the 1990 election, some 17 parties and 21 municipal movements took part. They are granted juridical stature of a temporary nature until the election is held.
