On Monday, 11 March, President Joaquín Balaguer attended a fund-raising dinner in aid of the presidential campaign of PRSC candidate Jacinto Peynado at the home of La Vega senator, Tony Rivera. Guests were asked to contribute RD$100,000 per plate. This caused expectation that the vice presidential candidate would be announced the following day. Some RD$12 million was collected at the dinner. While a press statement indicated that the candidate had been chosen, the announcement was not made the next day and the PRSC, as usual, kept the matter under wraps until the last minute.
