IMF gives Dominican economy thumbs up.

A report on the state of the Dominican economy, prepared by the IMF, confirms that the country’s nominal GNP grew by 4.8 percent in 1995 providing a per capita income of US$1,693. Also, the nation’s current account balance exceeded the US$51.2 million budgeted, and the balance of payments registered a surplus of over US$90 million, the first positive movement recorded in this respect in many years.

While the members of the IMF mission expressed their satisfaction with the government’s economic performance, they showed special concern about the public sector debt. In a visit they paid to the Ministry of Public Works, they documented debts amounting to RD$1,300 million owed by the State to the private sector.
