Country’s foreign reserves are on the rise

The Central Bank reports that the country’s foreign reserves amounted to US$532.7 million in February, an increase of 0.8 percent over December’s balance. It also announced that reserves totaled some US$384.6 in 1994, and that the balance in 1995 exceeded the beginning-of-year forecast by more than US$100 million.

The report indicates that the money supply fell by 3.6 percent, moving from DR$16,770.1 million in December to RD$16,163.2 in February. Although the Central Bank usually increases the money supply when there is an influx of U.S. dollars entering the country, as is happening now, it has done the contrary. The Bank gave no reasons for the change in its policy.
