Freddy Majluta, brother of the late president of the Partido Revolucionario Independiente (PRI), Jacobo Majluta, campaigned for José Francisco Peña Gómez together with other party leaders last week. Mr Majluta feels that the contribution of the PRI to the PRD campaign, as part of the Acuerdo de Santo Domingo coalition of parties, will enable it to win in the first round, reaching the needed 50%+1 vote.
On the other hand, newspaper reports indicate that there are internal problems within the PRI over the decision on who will take over the leadership of the party left vacant by the untimely death of its leader, Jacobo Majluta, as a result of complications arising from treatment for throat cancer.
One section supports the widow of the politician, Ana Elisa Villanueva for president. Another section, headed by Hector Guzmán, and Alberto Atallah have other plans. Political commentators say that the party should concentrate on supporting the candidacy of Peña Gómez, and leave the restructuring of the party until after the election.
