President asked to stop announcing new projects

Leonel Fernández, presidential candidate for the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana, has asked that President Balaguer abstain from announcing new public works and committing the government in new areas. President Balaguer on the campaign trail in Herrera announced the construction of a 250 bed hospital in that suburb. He also announced the construction of a sewage treatment plant in Los Tres Brazos and a sports area in Katanga de los Mina.

Dr Fernández was speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Wed., 17 April. In his speech he said that the government is in a state of discredit. He commented that surveys show that the credibility of the Executive Power is barely 10.2 percent among the population; that of Justice is 10.4% and that of the National Congress 13.3 %. On the other hand, he said that the Catholic Church, as an institution, has the recognition of 49.8% of the population. He said that the principal problem is the cancer of corruption, and its eradication depends on the implementation of the Law of Civil Service and Administrative Careers.
