A controversial new book

Dominican journalist Angela Peña has published a second edition of her book “Partidos Políticos y Presidentes Dominicanos” (Political Parties and Dominican Presidents), setting off new controversy with its revelations. The book looks into the life, accomplishments and the political career of President Balaguer and former President Juan Bosch, giving details hitherto unknown. The book was updated to include a chapter on Jacobo Majluta who died last month, a former president of the Republic for 45 days following the death of President Antonio Guzmán. The book features explanations by the Guzmán family, including Renée Klang and her daughter Sonia Guzmán de Hernández and her husband José María Hernández on what could have been the reasons that lead President Guzmán to commit suicide. The family mentions the then Governor of the Central Bank, Carlos Despradel, as one of those responsible for the decision of the late President, especially because he postponed handing the government the profits from the government gold mine, the Rosario Dominicana. As revealed by the Guzmán family members, these resources were essential to leaving the government finances in good standing before handing over government 45 days later. Mr Despradel has refuted these allegations saying that technical and legal reasons prevented him from handing over the monies when requested by the President. In turn, the Guzmán family says they do not agree with him. Those interested in reading the book can purchase it at principal bookshops, or by telephoning 566-5501 and having it hand delivered.
