Balaguer campaigns for PRSC

President Balaguer continued on his silent campaign trail principally in the company of Maribel Gassó, vice presidential candidate for the PRSC, and was received enthusiastically by throngs of Reformistas. (The President has chosen not to speak to the press at the rallies.) Maribel, politically an unknown previous to her selection, has now become a popular and well known figure. Dr Balaguer was scheduled to join the presidential candidate, Jacinto Peynado, in a major campaign finale in Santiago de los Caballeros and, on Sunday, he was to travel to Navarette, his home town, and then on to Puerto Plata. Visiting Monte Cristi, Santiago Rodriguez and other towns en route, he returned to Santo Domingo on Wednesday. For the days that he would be in the Cibao and North, he decreed that the seat of government would be Santiago. The PRSC rally scheduled for Saturday, 4 May was followed by another in the same place on Sunday at 10 am. Reformista spokesmen say that with the rally they will show they are a contender in the election and that it is not just an affair between the PRD and the PLD.

In the final days of the campaign, all candidates are concentrating on the Cibao and the northern regions.

The PLD announced it will close its campaign with a rally on 13 May in Santo Domingo, preceded by one on 11 May in Santiago. On 11 May, the PRD plans a major concentration in Santo Domingo. Other final PRD rallies are being held in Santiago and San Juan de la Maguana. The Reformistas closing rally is scheduled for 12 May in Santo Domingo.
