The vice presidential candidate for the PRD-Acuerdo de Santo Domingo, Fernando Alvarez Bogaert considers that President Balaguer has begun to campaign too late and that Jacinto Peynado was hurt by the past actions and words of the President. While he said that the campaigning of President Balaguer could produce an increase in those favoring Jacinto Peynado, it will not turn the situation around, as there are only two weeks to go. Furthermore, he said that the increase in votes for the Partido Reformista will come from 75% of the votes that the PLD will lose, while the other 25% will be votes that the Acuerdo de Santo Domingo will lose or will come from the undecided.
He said that a recent survey showed that 54% of the Reformista vote has moved to the PLD or to the Acuerdo and that 29% has moved to the PLD and 25% to the Acuerdo. He said that 90% of the Reformista leaders have joined his Unidad Democrática party. He said it was a strategic error of those close to President Balaguer to consider that the dismembering of the campaign of Mr Peynado would help Leonel, because they have now made it easier for the PRD-Acuerdo to win in the first round. He said that the Unidad Democrática, his own party, expects to contribute 150,000 votes to Dr Peña Gómez which, he says, will be a significant amount because for 30 years the PRSC has been making a Satan out of the PRD leader. He said that strategists in the PRSC thought no Reformista would vote for Dr Peña Gómez, but the reality has proven to the contrary as there are thousands of Reformista leaders campaigning for the candidate of the Acuerdo de Santo Domingo. He also said that a large portion of the rural middle class is supporting the Frente Agropecuario directed by Hipólito Mejía. Fernando Alvarez Bogaert is a dissident from the PRSC, who ran for vice president in the last election under the Unidad Democrática-PRD ticket.
