Mayor prepares to clean up city

Rafael Subervi said that he will begin a campaign in the city to rid it of posters and other political publicity. He said that his gangs are ready to act two days after the JCE announces the winner of the election. He explained that the placement of posters is part of a culture which is not easy to eradicate overnight. He said that in this election the politicians had been persuaded not to paint the trees. He expressed his hope that in the 1998 congressional campaign, the politicians desist from an uncontrolled daubing of the city.

He said that he expects that Peter Morales, who has sent out midnight brigades to take down posters, to participate in the clean up campaign. Mayor Suberví Bonilla, who aspires to the presidency of the Republic himself in a future election on the PRD ticket, said that underlying Peter Morales’ concern over the city’s cleanliness is a desire to provoke confrontations between the PRD and the PLD.
