The Dominican Republic has placed 60% of its banana quota in the European market. Osmar Benítez, executive vice president of the Junta Agroempresarial Dominicana (JAD), the principal farming organization, thinks that the EU might grant additional import permits to other nations in a defined region, in the case of some countries being unable to fulfill their quotas, a process known as the transferability system.
He also said that the production and export of bananas has maintained the expected rhythm for 1996, and observed that the country is almost reaching its quota in the EU market, indicating that it is holding the same level as last year when it satisfied its allocation well ahead of the set time. This year the country will face problems with its production surplus, if the Ministers of Agriculture in the EU do not ratify the transferability system.
