Campaign publicity being removed

The Santo Domingo municipal council, the Armed Forces and the Attwoods Dominicana refuse collection company are currently removing all the political publicity from the streets of the city after a campaign of almost two years leading up to the 1996 presidential election. Main traffic arteries in the capital including the Avenidas Winston Churchill, 27 de Febrero, George Washington (El Malecon) and Abraham Lincoln are starting to look like they did before the presidential campaign, after being covered for much of 1995 and the first half of 1996 with posters showing the pictures and slogans of the candidates.

The walls and lampposts were also painted with the colors of the main political parties. The operation has begun on the main streets of the capital, and will eventually extend to residential areas. Similar action is being taken in the provinces.
