Expo-Conde ’96 on El Conde Peatonal lectures on the site of Bartolo Columbus’ house (El Alcazar) in the Colonial City and various artistic presentations are just some of the events being organized to celebrate the 498th anniversary of the founding of the city of Santo Domingo.
After a series of seminars and meetings of historians, a consensus was reached that the official founding of the city was 5 August, 1498, and not 1496, as appears in most history books. This year’s events, which will last until 10 August, kicks off a general two year celebration leading up to the Fifth Centenary of the city’s founding on 5 August, 1998.
