Rafael Subervi meets with Dr Balaguer to discuss refuse collection

Santo Domingo’s mayor, Rafael Subervi Bonilla, met with President Joaquin Balaguer, and they are reported as having discussed the now chronic problem of refuse collection in the capital. According to the newspaper Listin Diario, the possibility of terminating the contract with the Attwoods Dominicana company for refuse collection was discussed at length, although nothing concrete was decided.

Rafael Subervi and his predecessor Rafael Corporan de los Santos have both expressed their dissatisfaction with the Attwoods company, which has been under contract to the Dominican government since 1992 for the collection of refuse in the capital. In the last few months the situation has grown worse, with rubbish piling up on the streets of the city, and seemingly nowhere to dump it, since the main site in the National District has been declared unfit to receive any more refuse.

Rafael Subervi, who claims that the central government has held back more than RD$500 million from the Santo Domingo city council during his two years as mayor, is to meet with President-elect Leonel Fernandez before the latter takes office on 16 August.
