Nothing official on exit prohibitions

Although the National Attorney General Abel Rodriguez del Orbe has confirmed that no heads of government agencies during the presidency of Joaquin Balaguer can leave the country until cleared by new President Leonel Fernandez, the Immigration Department has received no official notification of such action from central government.

Mr. Rodriguez del Orbe said that the General Comptroller of the Republic, who is currently conducting audits of the entities which handle the largest sums of public money, must give his approval on the ex-officers performance and a certification that funds were not irregularly employed in order to lift the exit prohibition. He was quick to emphasize, however, that although the ex-heads of government agencies are not permitted to leave the country does not mean that they have been implicated in any wrong-doing.

During the first two weeks of the government of Leonel Fernandez, public entities including the Corporation of State-Owned Enterprises (CORDE), the price stabilization agency known as INESPRE, and the Corporación Dominicana de Electricidad have been found to be in states of financial shambles.
