The new administrator of funds given by the European Union (EU) via the Lome IV convention, Max Puig, told the newspaper Hoy that President Leonel Fernandez has agreed to comply with the conditions set down by the EU for the administration of the monies destined for the D.R. Mr. Puig hinted that the financial support via Lome IV had been in danger when he said that “the most important thing is that the European help will not be interrupted.” During the last days of the administration of ex-President Joaquin Balaguer, the then administrator of Lome IV Aristides Fernanez Zucco heavily criticized his predecessor, Angel Lockward, accusing him of overseeing huge irregularities in the distribution of funds for health and education projects in the D.R. Those statements sparked protests from the EU that fell short of threatening to suspend the aid. Mr. Puig said that he has yet to discover such glaring irregularities in his preliminary findings in the Lome IV office.
