The General Director of the Telecommunications department, Ruben Montas, announced that by 20 September he will order the closing of all radio stations not authorized to broadcast in the D.R. The Dominican Association of Radio Broadcasters (ADORA) has claimed that there are tens of stations throughout the nation operating without authorization from Telecommunications. Mr Montas said that after determining which stations are indeed operating illegally, he will shut them down.
In other news related to the department, the Telemicro television station has gone back to channel 6 after an attempt to move it to channel 5, as dictated by a Telecommunications decree earlier this year. Mr. Montas, however, has said that the final order for the move to channel 5 has not been given, and that frequency still belongs to Radio Television Dominicana, whose broadcasts are mostly seen on channel 4. The director of Radio Television Dominicana, George Rodriguez, claims that channel 5 should be used for Japanese cultural programs, according to an agreement with the Jananese government that helped to equip the television station several years ago.
