The capital and the interior suffered power cuts imposed by the Corporacion Dominicana de Electricidad (CDE), last week, producing breaks in supply of up to six hours in some sectors. In a press release, the CDE’s public relations department said that the cuts are due to flaws in the distribution network and deficiencies in several transformers. The CDE emphasized that the new administration has found the transmission lines to be in “terrible condition”, and that some 300 transformers have been taken out of service to avoid overloads and subsequent explosions.
Improvement in the national electricity service is one of the hopes that people have for the new government and was one of the main themes for all candidates during the 1996 presidential campaign.
