D.R. seeks more active role in UN

The Dominican government is seeking an active role in the United Nations, according to Eduardo Latorre, the Minister for Foreign Relations. For the first time, the country is up to date with its dues to the United Nations. President Leonel Fernandez is scheduled to speak to the General Assembly on 3 October.

The Assembly began last Monday with a speech by U.S. President Bill Clinton. Eduardo Latorre told the Listin Diario that during his stay in New York he has made contacts with U.S., Central American and Caribbean ministers for foreign reltaions. He said that the D.R. seeks to take advantage of its participateion in the United Nations to contribute to internatinal security, and the economic and social development of the region.
