Dislodged families given housing

The director of the Bienes Nacionales department, Henry Garrido, has assigned government housing to 169 dislodged families who have been living in three churches in Santo Domingo for almost two years. Others in similar predicaments have now demanded housing from the new government of President Leonel Fernandez, as they did with the administration of former president Joaquin Balaguer. Mr. Garrido has announced that Bienes Nacionales will soon carry out a census in areas where displaced families live in makeshift homes under precarious conditions, mostly near the Ozama River and on the banks of small brooks and streams. The purpose of the census, says Mr. Garrido, is eventually to include those families in a government housing plan.
