Many people have expressed different views about raising public salaries by 100%, some of the those who are against it are: Alejandro Grullón, president of Grupo Financiero Popular, who said that any decision about increasing public salaries should be taken next year and should await the approval of the 1997 public expenditure general budget; the political secretary of the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), Federico Antún Batlle, says that a 100% public salary increase would result in acute economic inflation.
Andrés Dauhajre, president of the Unión Nacional de Empresarios, said the increase is necessary and fair but the government should increase collections of the ITBIs, a value added tax, and increase other taxes by between 14 and 20% in order to obtain the required funds.
