President Luis Abinader and Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera inaugurated a program to reforest many of the nation’s watersheds. The current program is going to be financed by RD$1 billion. It is expected to provide around 9,000 jobs and cover 620,000 hectares. This massive reforestation effort is aimed as preserving the ecology, protecting the watersheds that feed the nations reservoirs and hydropower stations.
The new plan begins in the Nizao River valley with over 100 hectares being planted with local pines, cedar and coffee. The Nizao watershed provides water to 1.7 million people, 40% of the water to Santo Domingo and irrigation water to allow 14,000 of agriculture to flourish in Bani and San Cristobal.
