TD Grace becomes a “no show” for the Dominican Republic

The good news: Tropical Storm Grace became Tropical Depression Grace and then a “no show.” This means rains and mudslides will be considerably less than forecasted for Monday, 16 August 2021. The National Meteorological Office (Onamet) has forecast heavy rains for the northeast, southeast, Greater Santo Domingo, Central Mountain Range and the border with Haiti.

As of the 5am NHC bulletin, Grace had moved west of Santo Domingo. The storm is on a path that could take it to slide between Cuba and Jamaica onwards to Mexico. The bad news is that it could pass over the southwestern side of Haiti, the same area that recently has been devastated by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

Originally, TS Grace had been forecast to run the same path as TSFred, diagonally crossing the Dominican Republic and bringing lots of heavy rains and flooding.

In prevention, the Center for Emergency Operations (COE) had banned bathing in beaches and rivers and called for all who had gone on vacation for the 16 August long weekend holiday to return home to await the storm. Nevertheless, by the evening of 15 August, weather forecasters could see TDGrace would be a no show.
