The Dominican government has approved the hosting of the Central American and Caribbean Sports Games in 2026. These will be the 25th regional games. Santo Domingo had hosted these games in 1974, when the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center was built for the event.
As reported, President Luis Abinader has given his full support to hosting the event in Santo Domingo in 2026. President Abinader sent a video expressing his support to the games to the participants in the extraordinary assembly of the Centro Caribe Sports during the Cali-Valle Pan American Youth Games in Cali. “Santo Domingo is the perfect place to host these games,” said the President. Abinader highlighted in his message that 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Centro Caribe Sports (formerly Odecabe). Centro Caribe Sports is the oldest regional sports organization in the world.
Sports Minister Francisco Camacho, Minister of Sports; Antonio Acosta and Gilberto García, president and general secretary of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD) and the members of the committee in charge of the host proposal, José Manuel Ramos and Arístides Fernández Zucco made a presentation of the city of Santo Domingo as the future host city.
The next regional games would have been celebrated in Panama in 2022, but Panama desisted from the responsibility due to extraordinary expenses to combat the Covid pandemic. The 2022 games will now be celebrated 6 May to 21 May in 2023 in San Salvador, El Salvador.
