Pope Francis named a Bronx, New York priest as the youngest bishop in the United States. He was appointed an auxiliary bishop of the New York archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church.

Father Joseph Espaillat, 45, is a New York native of Dominican descent. His parents migrated to New York from Santiago de los Caballeros, Yosper.do reports. “Father J” has a podcast and a flair for rap music. Currently, he is the pastor at the St. Anthony of Padua Parish and director of the Hispanic Charismatic Renewal. He will be ordained to the episcopacy on 1 March 2022 in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Manhattan.

The Catholic News Agency reported that Espaillat would be the youngest US bishop, almost 15 months younger than the next on the list.

The priest is a former parochial vicar and pastor of Saint Peter’s Parish in Yonkers, parochial vicar of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Manhattan, and director of Youth Ministry for the archdiocese. He graduated in Philosophy from Fordham University in 1998 and has a masters in Divinity and Theology from St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie, New York. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2003.
