Congressman requests Metro extension to San Cristobal

Congressman Otoniel Tejeda Martinez (PRM-San Cristóbal) submitted a draft resolution on Tuesday, 24 May 2022 requesting President Luis Abinader include in the 2023 National Budget allocations for the start of the construction of the extension of the Santo Domingo Metro to the province of San Cristóbal, to the west.

The Presidency has allocated funds for the extension of the Metro to the northern municipality of Los Alcarrizos, in northern Santo Domingo.

The San Cristóbal congressman says the new Metro extension would connect from the Metro stop at the Centro de los Héroes. He proposes stops in Haina, Hatillo and next on to the San Cristobal, the capital city of San Cristobal province, a direct line west from the Centro de los Heroes stop.

“The Metro extension will represent savings of hundreds of thousands of pesos for thousands of vulnerable and low-income San Cristobalenses families who daily commute to Santo Domingo, either to work, study, do business or for health reasons, among other activities,” said Otoniel Tejeda.

The legislator indicates that in recent years the flow of vehicles on the highway linking San Cristóbal with Santo Domingo has increased considerably. He pointed out that as the years go by traffic will continue to grow, thus increasing the chaos generated at the entrance and exits of the province that leads to the south.

“By having an extension of the Metro to San Cristobal, the vehicular flow to and from our province would decrease considerably and therefore also traffic accidents and mobility costs,” Tejeda pointed out.
